Instrumentation and Controls Engineer III
Job Description
Location: Quarry Park 505 (Calgary, AB)
- Evaluate and review discipline engineering work performed internally and by contractors to ensure alignment with project specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Facilitate the effective execution of control and instrumentation engineering and design activities, ensuring accurate and timely communication across teams.
- Lead lifecycle management programs for control systems, including inventory tracking, obsolescence planning, spare part management, and upgrade/replacement strategies.
- Support control system maintenance, testing, and software upgrades, including ESD testing, offline/online validation, and coordination of activities during both normal operations and shutdowns.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance and calibration for metering systems used in custody transfer, allocation, regulatory reporting, and leak detection applications.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of cybersecurity measures and ensure compliance with Imperial’s Industrial Control System Requirements (ICSR).
- Collaborate in alarm management initiatives—perform alarm rationalization, prioritization, and develop state-based alarm schemes and control logic modifications.
- Develop, review, and update technical documentation, including P&IDs, control narratives, cause and effect diagrams, and system architecture drawings.
- Provide field support and coordination at production sites and offices for system rollouts, commissioning, and upgrades.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
- Extensive experience in instrumentation and control system engineering within oil & gas, petrochemical, or industrial environments.
- Strong understanding of design standards, specifications, and safety codes relevant to instrumentation and control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and modify engineering documents such as P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, logic schematics, and control narratives.
- Proven experience in selecting and specifying instrumentation and control devices (pressure, temperature, level instruments, control valves, shutdown valves, fire/gas detection systems, etc.).
- Proficiency in data collection and analysis using SAP, Analytics for Excel, and Tableau.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across disciplines and manage competing priorities.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently under tight deadlines and shifting priorities.
- Fluent in written and spoken English with strong technical documentation skills.
- Onboarding Requirements: Background Check, Confidentiality Agreement, and A&D (Non-Sensitive / Low Exposure) compliance.

- Travel: Occasional travel to field sites may be required.
