Senior Drilling Engineer – Heavy Oil / SAGD
Job Description
- Lead the engineering planning, design, and execution of drilling programs, ensuring performance, safety, and compliance objectives are met.
- Conduct comprehensive offset well reviews and identify drilling hazards using historical and subsurface data.
- Develop well plans that integrate geologic, reservoir, and operational objectives aligned with business targets.
- Prepare AFE-level cost estimates, analyze alternatives, and provide recommendations to optimize cost and performance.
- Define and manage equipment and materials requirements, ensuring timely readiness for operations.
- Prepare and evaluate technical bids for drilling-related services and equipment.
- Provide rig site surveillance and engineering support, including troubleshooting and real-time decision-making during drilling and completion activities.
- Collaborate with geology, reservoir, and project teams to ensure that well design supports overall development goals.
- Support the testing and implementation of new drilling technologies and practices to improve operational efficiency.
- Ensure all well designs and operations comply with Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and corporate standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Petroleum, Mechanical, or related discipline).
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta – required.
- Minimum 8+ years of drilling engineering experience, including strong expertise in Heavy Oil and SAGD operations.
- Proficiency with well design software, cost modeling, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with a collaborative and safety-driven mindset.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple wells/projects and deliver under tight deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field locations as required.
- Direct field-based drilling supervision or rig site engineering experience.
- Knowledge of well integrity management, completions design, and subsurface integration.
- Familiarity with Landmark, WellView, and EBS applications.
