Position Overview

The Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will provide advanced technical expertise and project support for the design, maintenance, and lifecycle management of control systems across Imperial Oil facilities. This role ensures that instrumentation and control systems operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with company and regulatory standards.

The successful candidate will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to support ongoing plant operations, upgrades, cybersecurity initiatives, and project execution. This position requires strong analytical skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical oversight and review of instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering work performed internally or by contractors to ensure adherence to project specifications, corporate standards, and applicable codes.
  • Execute and maintain control system lifecycle management programs, including inventory tracking, obsolescence planning, spare parts management, and upgrade/replacement strategies.
  • Plan and support control system maintenance and testing activities such as software upgrades, emergency shutdown (ESD) testing, and commissioning (both online and offline, with and without plant shutdowns).
  • Support metering system maintenance for custody transfer, allocation, regulatory compliance, and leak detection applications.
  • Lead and coordinate tasks related to control system cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with Imperial’s Industrial Control System Requirements (ICSR) to minimize operational risks.
  • Participate in alarm management initiatives, including rationalization, prioritization, and development of state-based alarm schemes and system modifications.
  • Review, develop, and update I&C documentation — including P&IDs, cause and effect matrices, control narratives, and architecture diagrams.
  • Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and IT teams to deploy global control system initiatives and provide on-site support as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in instrumentation, control systems, or automation engineering within industrial or energy sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of instrumentation and control design standards, codes, and safety criteria (ISA, CSA, API, etc.).
  • Proven ability to interpret and develop control system documentation such as logic diagrams, cause and effect charts, and P&IDs.
  • Hands-on experience specifying and selecting field instruments, control valves, and fire/gas detection systems.
  • Strong data analysis capabilities using SAP, Excel, and analytics tools (e.g., Tableau).
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity practices for industrial control systems.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with process control systems used in refining, petrochemical, or oil and gas facilities.
  • Familiarity with alarm management and lifecycle standards (ISA 18.2, IEC 62682).
  • Previous exposure to control system modernization projects or system integration initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting multi-site operations and coordinating global rollout initiatives.
Additional Information
  • Work Region: Rest of Canada
  • Target Rate: $100/hour (contingent assignment)
  • Occasional travel to affiliate offices and production facilities is required.
  • Standard onboarding applies, including background check and confidentiality agreement.
